This is a very pretty original Japanese watercolor of a park with cherry trees in full bloom, two large stone lanterns - one on either side of a path - and a very tall pagoda in the background. Though this is a relatively small watercolor, it is quite vibrant and "full" without being crowded. Light penciling of the stone lanterns can be seen as areas of many Japanese watercolors of the period were first lightly sketched. The piece is signed 'Rantei' in the lower left corner. This watercolor, which is painted on heavy paper, only measures 9 5/8" by 12 7/8" - an excellent size for a small 'sitting corner' wall. This piece is in very nice condition. There is some light matburn along the left edge that could be easily matted out but otherwise the front shows little or no indication of fading or toning. The left edge was unevenly trimmed but with no effect to the picture itself. The back of the piece shows toning from previously being framed without the use of acid-free materials ...... $325.00 |
