This is a beautifully illustrated hardcover book titled: Japanese Toys: Playing With History, written by Kazuya Sakamoto, translated and adapted by Charles A. Pomeroy, and illustrated with photographs by Kiyoshi Sonobe. This English language edition was published jointly by Bijutsu Shuppan-Sha, Tokyo and Charles E. Tuttle Company, Inc., Vermont, copyright 1965, published September, 1965 (no further printing history and no edition stated, presumed a first English language edition). The is a large book, with 516 pages, measures 10 1/4" tall by about 2" thick and containing many, many photographs - quite often full-page. The boards are covered with blue silk with gold lettering on the spine, protected by a colorful dust wrap and a cardboard slipcase. The book has been lightly used, the pages are tight, clean and unmarked, the cover has a flat spine and sharp corners, although the top back corner has a mild crease. The dust wrap shows general rubbing, light soil, and the edges are scuffed and creased. The dust wrap front flap has a clipped bottom inner corner and a U.S. $17.50 price on the top inner corner. The top outer corner of the front flap has small tears from contact with a staple in the slipcase, but the book cover was not affected and it is not visible on the front of the dust wrap. The cardboard slipcase shows wear and soil, but is intact. The book is not remaindered and is not an ex-library book. More photos available upon request ...... $175.00 |
