This is a Chinese Export Rose Canton reticulated oval porcelain basket, with matching underplate, known as a chestnut basket, or sometimes referred to as a fruit basket. The basket measures 8 5/16 inches x 7 1/4 inches wide x 3 1/8 inches tall. The underplate or undertray measures 9 inches x 7 3/4 inches wide x 1 3/8 inches at the rim. The overglaze enamel painting is the "rose and long life" variation of the Rose Canton pattern, with alternating long life symbols, birds and flowers, and rose and butterfly decoration. Both pieces are stamped 'Made in China' on the bottom. This chestnut basket and underplate date to the late 19th/early 20th century, and have no cracks, chips or repairs. There is some wear to the gilt and decoration around the rims, and there are minor losses to the heavily enameled openwork, mostly where it bubbled during firing, and there is a tiny broken bubble on the rim of the underplate.
