Aoki Kameido Tenjin Shrine Wisteria Japanese Watercolor
Click on image above for more views

This is a very interesting and unusual Japanese watercolor showing a number of kimono-clad ladies, and other shadowy figures, on the walkway of the wisteria garden at the Kameido Tenjin Shrine and signed 'Aoki'. The scene is interesting because, though it has been portrayed by such noteable artists as Hiroshige in woodblock print form, I've not found any examples of the wisteria at Kameido Tenjin Shrine depicted in watercolor. The image is unusual becasue I've not found other pieces by Aoki expressed in this dreamy, ethereal style, a style that has been shown favor by other well-known Japanese artists such as Yamada Baske.

This watercolor is in very good condition. This watercolor is on heavy paper and measures 20 1/8" by 13 1/2". The viewable area, when properly matted and framed, measures 19 1/4" by 12 3/4". The front shows no indication of matte line from previous framing(s). There is light pencilling to be seen at various spots along the edge of the image and there is some minimal, light moisture spotting in the upper right corner. I can't tell if this is a later occurance or happened at the time of creation. There are also about 6 or so very small brown specks in different areas of the image. The back has some calligraphy and stamped printing that says 'Made In Japan' ...... $1475.00
