.
This is an impressive jardiniere made in Sarreguemines, Lorraine, France, measuring 12 inches at the tallest and 19 inches at the widest. The name Sarreguemines in sans-serif capitol letters is impressed on the bottom, a mark used between 1889-1922 according to the reference I used. The bottom is also impressed with the number 2510 and the letter Z. The squiggle in gold on the bottom may be the decorator's mark. The jardiniere is made of faience with a rich brown high gloss glaze with overglaze gold highlights. There are wonderful satyr faces on either side with crossed grape vines creating the handles and then scrolling gracefully around the body. The piece is in lovely condition with minimal crazing, light iridescent residue on the interior, minor rubs, a very small flake on an upper, outer knot of one of the large grape vines above a mask, and two small unrepaired chips to the foot rim, the smaller on the inner foot rim and the larger, about 3/8 inch square, on the opposite outer foot rim. There are no hairlines and no restorations. The photos are accurate (please excuse the fingerprint smudges from handling) ...... $4,250.00 |
