This is a beautiful model of the Lionel 400E "Blue Comet" 4-4-4 Steam Engine and Vanderbilt Tender produced by Lionel/MTH, a re-issue of the Lionel standard gauge version of 1931. The Lionel "Blue Comet" passenger train was patterned after the Central Railroad New Jersey (CNJ) commuter train, even down to the names of the cars. Lionel produced the largest locomotive in its history to pull the three car "Blue Comet". The Standard Guage 400E light blue 4-4-4 with a round Vanderbilt tender was nearly 30 inches long. Lionel/MTH reproduced the massive locomotive, tender in 1990, as well as the three different cars which are NOT included here.

The engine looks nearly new except for light middle rail marks on the motor rollers and indication that it has been oiled/serviced. The tender is also in excellent condition though there is an enamel crack (see photos) at the corner of the curved roof - it looks like it is original to the initial enameling process. The engine and tender measure a very respectible 31 1/2 inches long. This is an earlier model as that does not have the Proto 2.0 sound with it. The engine has been tested and runs smoothly. I only did a very minimal test because I recently acquired this and I don't know how long it had been stored or when it was last serviced. Both pieces come in their Mike's Train House box...
